Germany is a global powerhouse for engineering and technology. Public universities offer world-class education with no tuition fees, making it the most cost-effective destination for high-quality degrees.
For Indian students, the APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) certificate is mandatory for a student visa. It verifies your academic documents and is required before applying to universities.
To secure a visa, you must deposit approx €11,904 into a German blocked account. This money is released monthly to cover your living expenses while studying.
Public universities are tuition-free but highly competitive. Private universities charge fees but often offer more flexible admission criteria and intensive career support.
Once you have an admission letter and Blocked Account, apply for a National Visa (Type D). Processing time is usually 4-8 weeks via VFS Global.
Even in free public universities, you pay a "Semesterbeitrag" (€150-€400), which usually includes a "Semesterticket" for free regional public transport.
International programs (English-taught) are plentiful in Masters. However, basic German (A1/A2) is highly recommended for daily life and part-time jobs.
After graduation, you get 18 months to find a job related to your degree. Germany has a massive shortage of skilled workers in STEM and Healthcare.
International students can work 140 full days or 280 half days per year. The minimum wage is attractive (approx €12.41+ per hour).
Apply for "Studentenwerk" dorms early. Private options include "WG" (shared apartments), which are popular and affordable for students.
Public health insurance (TK/AOK) is mandatory for students under 30. It costs approx €120/month and covers almost all medical expenses.
German degrees follow the ECTS system. Ensure your previous degree credits align with the German university's requirements for a smooth admission.
Fachhochschulen focus on practical training and industry links. They are excellent for students wanting to enter the job market immediately after graduation.
Germans value punctuality and directness. Student life is rich with "Mensa" (cafeteria) culture, sports clubs, and vibrant weekend festivals.
Universities have "Career Services" that help with internships and job fairs. Networking via LinkedIn and local "Stammtisch" groups is very effective.
